Galatians 1:6-10
NIV (v6) – ‘I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel . . .’
ESV (v6) – ‘I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel . . .’
It almost seems sad that immediately after his introduction to the Church at Galatia that Paul has to move into some sort of rebuke, for he has learned that among them there are those who have moved away from the true gospel to another or a different gospel which Paul quickly follows up by saying ‘not that there is another one’. But he has done it out of his love, care, and concern for them. He is astonished that they are quickly deserting to a message that is being preached by others which is contrary to the true gospel or has been distorted in some way that it can no longer be considered as the gospel. Paul is so adamant in his position on this that he says ‘if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.’ He does not mince his words nor pussyfoot around; his verdict and announcement are clear. He would not tolerate anything infiltrating the Church which is counter to the truth of the full gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, so although I started by saying it almost seems sad he had to start with a rebuke, it isn’t sad, because we see this man whose life itself has been transformed by the gospel is determined to protect the purity of the gospel, not willing to dilute it, distort it or diminish its power, for as he tells the Church at Corinth, the gospel is the Cross of Christ and it is the power of God unto salvation. (1 Corinthians 1:18)
In Romans 1:16, Paul demonstrates his 100% commitment towards the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ by saying ‘For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.’ In his closing statements to Timothy, Paul would say ‘For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.’ (2 Timothy 4:6-8) He had truly defended the gospel, not willing for anyone or anything to stand in its way, not willing for anyone or anything to pervert it or to water it down, he knew that his very life depended upon it, both in this present age and eternity.
May God help us, to ensure that we keep the gospel message pure, both in our preaching of it and in our living it out, standing firm on the whole counsel of God in regard to the work of the Cross and in the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. May it never be said of anyone of us that we have become accursed because we have moved away and began to present another gospel, ‘not that there is another one.’
Going back to the Scripture from Romans 1:16, Paul continues into verse 17 with ‘For in it (that is in the gospel) the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith as it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.’ This aptly takes us forward for our devotion tomorrow.
