FRIDAY May 26th
Acts 2:1-4
‘When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.’
I have chosen these verses today to remind us that this Sunday (May 28th) is Pentecost Sunday, the day in which we remember the above Scripture that reminds us of the arrival of the Holy Spirit upon the 120 who were waiting in obedience to the command of Jesus in the Upper room. Acts 1:4-5 ‘And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”’
Now, God willing this will be my theme when I share Gods word on Sunday morning, but for now in this devotion, I am reminding us that that which was poured out upon those waiting in that Upper room is also available to you and me, as Peter gets up to expound to those who witnessed all that took place he says to them ‘And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”’ Acts 2:38-39
How much do we desire or long to be filled with the Holy Spirit? Can I challenge us all to think on this matter over the weekend and to come prepared to the House of God on Sunday morning in readiness, prepared to allow the Holy Spirit to do what he wants to do or what he needs to do among us. In the words of the well known hymn, we need another Pentecost, send the fire today.
O God of burning cleansing flame
Send the fire
Your blood-bought gift today we claim
Send the fire today
Look down and see this waiting host
And send the promised Holy Ghost
We need another Pentecost
Send the fire today
Send the fire today
Elaine and I are on holiday next week, visiting our family in North Wales, so the devotions will return on Monday June 5th
