Psalm 139:14

‘I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.’

I have returned to Psalm 139 again this week for as I have been preparing these few recent devotions and read through the verses of this Psalm, this was a verse that blessed me. It is firstly a declaration that I will do something, ‘I will praise you’, and then the reason why I will do it, ‘for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.’

Just stop and consider this for a moment, for  although this is a statement David has made about himself, it is also a statement that each one of us can make, ‘God I will praise you, because I am fearfully and wonderfully made!’

I’m not a medical practitioner, but I know enough to understand about the complexity of the human body and the more I stop and think about how everything works in harmony to keep me fit and alive it is absolutely incredible. The heart beating, the lungs breathing, the nerves sending signals, the brain thinking, the hands able to write what I’m thinking, my ears able to distinguish sound and my lips to speak out, my eyes to see and my legs and feet to get me about, the list is almost endless, and the more I contemplate the more I wonder, and the more I wonder, the more amazed as to how great God is therefore ‘I will praise you!

Let some think that we have evolved from some other species, but more fool them, I am sure, I know that I am fearfully and wonderfully made by the One who created all things at the beginning of time. If I had evolved or we had evolved out of chance or some fluke of ecology then everything else is down to chance, even the future, but because I know that God created and ordered all things to be, then my future is safe in his hands as I have come to trust him and entrust my life to him. ‘I will praise you’, ‘I must praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made’.
